So the infamous Stoney Cove… It’s not somewhere I have ever wanted to go before, I had heard too many bad things about the diving there and with the press attention it gets when ever there is a tragedy there, I’d been totally put off. However, I was convinced to go by my usual dive buddies and I succumbed.
It costs you £17 to get in. I’ll mention that to start, but the site itself boasts some brilliant facilities including a pub, food hatch (for wet divers) and a 2 floor shop. My main niggle with the facilities is having to pay for a shower (and I’m not sure how much as there wasn’t a sign!) I’m not sure that is on given the price to get in… The changing facilities were like a converted porta cabin and could do with being a bit warmer, but ho hum, we are divers and have changed in worse!
There is plenty to see underwater including some helicopters, landrovers, boats and even a nessie – if you can see it! The vis tends to be really poor. The one good thing about the site is that it’s nice and deep – but navigating in the deep and it’s DARK – a thick darkness that’s hard to explain – not easy. This was where I had my first taste of narcosis, and whilst that was fun, it’s easy to see why this dive site can be so dangerous.

On the day of diving I did we spotted plenty of crayfish in the shallows, some pike in one of the swim throughs and some nice rocks. Plenty of particles and darkness. It’s not a dive site for me unless I’m going really deep to mess about with torches, but for many it’s a great site for learning!
